Billy was diagnosed with a tumor in his spinal column in 1989 when he was a senior in high school. During surgery, we found out that the tumor was a terminal brain cancer called an astrocytoma grade 4. We couldn’t have been more shocked and devastated as Billy was a healthy, sports playing teenager. He was kind and caring and had many friends. After surgery, he was paralyzed from the chest down, however, started in the fall of 1989 at Wright State University. He made the Dean’s List and played wheelchair basketball! Then in February 1990, the tumor came back and was inoperable. The “unthinkable” happened when he lost his cancer battle on December 1, 1990 at age 19. Throughout his cancer journey, he was brave, optimistic and hopeful. So many friends rallied around him. He was blessed with a “Special Wish” to visit his Boston Celtics idol, Larry Bird, and the soccer fields at his school (The Miami Valley School) are named the Billy Glisson Fields. Such blessings. While his loss was so many years ago, the wound we feel from his loss is just as strong today as it was in 1990.
