Urijah’s fight so far has been the bravest thing I have ever witnessed.
It started in a way that didn’t feel dramatic at first. Small changes. Quiet worries. Then suddenly our world split into “before” and “after.” Scans, words no parent ever wants to hear, and the moment I realized our toddler was about to face something bigger than most adults ever will.
Urijah underwent brain surgery, and in the days that followed we learned about new challenges we hadn’t prepared for. Posterior fossa syndrome changed the way he spoke, the way he moved, the way he expressed himself. Watching your child struggle to do things that once came so easily is a kind of grief that lives in your chest and never fully leaves.
Then came chemo. Five different drugs. Cycles that blur together. Long hospital days and longer nights. Tubes, medications, beeping machines, and a little boy who still wants to play, laugh, and be held. A body so small carrying a weight so heavy.
And yet, Urijah keeps showing us what strength looks like. Strength looks like smiling through nausea. It looks like learning how to communicate all over again. It looks like trusting the people poking and prodding him every day. It looks like resting his head on my shoulder and finding comfort there, even when nothing makes sense.
This fight has taken so much from him already, but it hasn’t taken his light. His name means “my light is Jehovah,” and I see that truth every single day. In the middle of fear, God’s presence has been steady. In the middle of exhaustion, there has been grace. In moments where I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I have been carried.
We don’t know how the rest of this journey will unfold. We do know that Urijah is fighting with everything he has, and we will fight right alongside him. One day at a time. One treatment at a time. Holding onto hope, faith, and the unshakable love that fills this room.
This is Urijah’s fight so far. And his story is still being written. đź’›
