On 8/1/24, Abel went for an eye exam because he was having a lot of headaches and we thought he just needed glasses. They saw tons of pressure behind his eyes and had him take an MRI that day. Later that evening we were admitted to Morgantown Children's Hospital and we found out he had a large tumor on his brain so they scheduled brain surgery for the next morning. On 8/2/24 he had his first surgery which took over 7hrs. They weren't unable to safely remove all of the tumor but they removed some of it. They sent off some of the tumor to Chicago and it took forever but on 9/11/24 but pathology finally came back and determined it was Diffuse Midline Glioma. On 9/12/24 Abel was having tons of headaches again, along with vomiting, and had to go back to have another surgery to input a shunt due to tons of pressure on his brain. He started radiation and chemotherapy on 9/26/24 he had 30 sessions of radiation and 42 doses of chemotherapy medication. Radiation ended on 11/6/24 and chemotherapy medication ended on 11/7/24. He is currently on a break from treatment but has a follow up MRI on 11/25/24.
