Haley was having headaches her entire kindergarten year. I lived on the same street as the school and we had gotten to where the teacher would text me and say “Haley is turning white again” and I’d run to the school in time to take her to the bathroom to vomit and bring her home. Her pediatrician at the time kept diagnosing Haley with migraines. In May, towards the end of the school year, after countless visits to regular ERs and her pediatrician, it was Haley (6 years old!!) that voiced for herself that made someone listen. She said “mom, I don’t have a headache, I don’t feel like I’m going to throw up but somethings not ok. My body is not ok. Please take me to the ER.” I made the long trek to the childrens hospital where Haley voiced the same thing to the ER Dr as she did to me and within 30 minutes of arriving we found out that Haley had a tumor on the brain stem. Of course I was terrified for brain surgery and Haley said “it’s ok mom, I want this out of me. I’m tired of it hurting me.” It was the bravest thing I’ve ever witnessed.
