Ella was diagnosed with DIPG on February 4, 2020. 💔 She completed 30 radiation treatments on March 25, and the results were remarkable. By summer, she had regained all of her physical abilities. That season was full of joy and hope. We spent time at one of our favorite places in Ohio, affectionately known as our “doubt trout house” (inspired by Dr. Seuss), before taking a 12-day vacation to Gulf Shores, AL, and Destin, FL. It was a trip filled with cherished memories, including Ella learning to swim without floaties. She was fearless and full of life. We spent countless hours at our neighborhood pool, where she loved swimming and playing with friends. In August 2020, we celebrated her 4th birthday with an unforgettable backyard party surrounded by her closest friends.
Sadly, in late September, signs of concern returned when Ella’s eyelid began to droop. An MRI was scheduled and confirmed tumor progression on October 2.
By early November, we knew we needed to bring Christmas early. On November 14, thanks to A Special Wish and the incredible support of our community and friends, Santa himself delivered a truly magical Christmas filled with love, light, and sooo many gifts that gave her such joy. Christmas came just in time, as just days later, Ella could no longer play with her new toys.
As is often the case with DIPG, Ella's condition declined quickly. She spent her final weeks in a paralyzed state and passed away peacefully in our arms on Christmas morning. With faith in her heart, Ella's big sister Lilly brought peace to our hearts when she exclaimed, "she's the perfect birthday present for Jesus!"
Ella’s tumor was donated to research through the DIPG Registry and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. The Cure Starts Now has stood by us throughout this journey, offering strength and hope that a cure will be found soon.
